Tickle Days
In 1995 the YWCA established Tickle Days, the preschool for
children of homeless families. This program is unique in that it offers a
stress free, structured environment to address the individual needs of each
child. The program includes a developmental program for language and motor
skills. It also provides nutritional food, safety and comfort. The location
of the facility remains autonomous for the protection of the children. All
services are free.
The Tickle Days Program is a moms-day out program for homeless women
currently residing in shelters. The program serves preschool children from
6 months to 5 years of age from Penelope House, the Salvation Army's
Women and Children Shelter, Sybil Smith Family Village and other
shelters. It is also available to women who are making a transition from
living in a shelter to independent living. Tickle Days enables the women
to seek employment, housing, government help and legal help without having
to take their children with them. Services are also provided for school
age children in grades K-5. These services include after-school
care/transportation, holiday activities and a summer camp experience.
The program operates 5 days a week, Monday - Friday from 8 am to 4 pm. The
daily activity schedule includes self-help, recreational, social and
educational activities designed to enhance their lives. Field trips and
educational activities are also provided for the older children
(ages 6 - 12) during
holidays and when school is out for the summer. The center also provides
transportation for women living in shelters to attend support groups and
other life-skill enhancement programs.
In addition to educational services, children are provided a daily nutritional
meal and two snacks. Area churches and organizations provide meals; Dauphin
Way United Methodist, Government Street Presbyterian and
Salvation Army are the main providers. Other companies,
organizations and individuals have been generous with donations and
financial support during holidays and for special events.
The staff consists of a Program Coordinator, two child care specialists,
a curriculum specialist and a child care aide. The aide's position is
provided by the Mobile County Public School System and the Foster
Grandparent Program provides a Foster Grand Parent.
